The company is named Königliches Berg- und Hüttenwerk (Royal Mine and Steel Works)

1880

Production of agricultural machinery (toothed gear units, motorized road rollers, diesel locomotives, ballast excavators)

1927

The company is renamed Bayerische Berg-, Hütten- und Salzwerke AG, Zweigniederlassung Hüttenwerk Sonthofen (Bavarian Mine, Steel and Salt Works Company, Sonthofen Steel Works)

1932

Production of planetary gear units begins with the takeover of Stoeckicht—the start of precision mechanical engineering at BHS

1951

Development of a double helical-geared Stoeckicht planetary gear unit for steam turbine drives

1954

The first BHS parallel shaft gear unit

1960

BHS manufactures gear units for the first five of Germany’s post-war Cologne-class frigates

1960

A range of high-speed tooth couplings is developed

1961

The first turning gear units to use the swivelling pinion principle are manufactured

1963

The first of 20 planetary gear units with an internal gear diameter of 2.5 m (8 ft) is delivered for hydroelectric power stations on the Moselle river

1965

High-speed parallel shaft gear units with reference speeds of >100 m/s (>328 ft/s) for gas turbine drives and transmission outputs of 18 MW are delivered for the first time

1965

The first hydrostatically-controlled planetary gear unit (speed-modulating gearbox) for turbine compressors is developed

1967–68

Starting gear units and adjustable mechanisms, known as multi-pinion gearboxes, are developed for gas turbines

1970

Stoeckicht is taken over, together with all its patents

Multi-pinion gearboxes with integrated compressor stages

1971

BHS acquires the turbo gear unit portfolio of Krupp, Essen

1973

BHS licenses Cincinnati Gear, USA, to manufacture planetary gear units

1973

The first thrust collar-type turbo parallel shaft gear unit is built

1976

First turbo parallel shaft gear unit with an output of over 30 MW for gas turbine drive applications

1979

The first of twelve gear units for class F122 frigates is delivered to the German navy

1980

With an output of 47 MW, the most powerful turbo parallel shaft gear unit yet seen for gas turbine drives is built

1980

The first turbo parallel shaft gear unit with a reference speed of 200 m/s (656 ft/s) is delivered

1982

High-speed supercritical multi-pinion gearboxes in thrust cone form are developed for integrated multi-stage compressors
